A beautiful antique European painted pine cabinet or Bauernschrank, featuring a wonderfully timeworn dark ground with hand-painted floral decoration in muted shades of ochre, green, rust and cream.
The single plank-built door is centered with a stylized flowering urn, flanked by tall scrolling floral panels. A molded reddish-brown cornice and base frame the painted façade, while turned bun feet give the substantial cabinet a slightly elevated profile. Particularly noteworthy is the hardware, including long hand-forged iron strap hinges and an elaborate decorative lock mechanism visible on the interior.
The cabinet is constructed in the traditional manner from wide softwood boards, with an unpainted pine interior. Its worn painted surface, exposed wood, age cracks and irregularities give it an exceptionally appealing, authentic patina.
Bavarian or Alpine European, dating to approximately the late 1700s tp early 1800s. Bauernschränke were practical household storage cupboards that were frequently decorated with regional folk painting, particularly floral and botanical motifs.
A highly decorative piece that works equally well as an armoire, linen cupboard, entry storage or statement cabinet.
Condition: Significant wear, losses, cracking and surface variation consistent with age and use. The painted decoration remains remarkably legible and attractive. Evidence of old repairs and alterations should be expected in a cabinet of this age.
