An impressive 18th-century French Provincial buffet à deux corps, crafted in solid oak during the Louis XV period, circa 1750–1780.
The traditional two-part form features a tall upper cupboard set over a substantial lower buffet, a design developed to provide generous household storage while maintaining a relatively narrow footprint. At nearly 7 1/2 feet tall, the piece has wonderful architectural presence, while its 17 1/2-inch depth makes it unusually versatile for a piece of this scale.
Constructed in oak, the buffet reflects the more restrained interpretation of Louis XV design found in provincial France, where locally made furniture combined graceful proportions and subtle curves with substantial, practical construction. The aged oak surface and patina developed over more than two centuries give the piece the character particularly sought after in authentic French country furniture.
A striking statement piece for a dining room, kitchen, library or living space, offering both considerable storage and the unmistakable presence of genuine 18th-century furniture.
Sourced from a sprawling estate in Millbrook, New York.
