A French Norman armoire de mariage in old-growth oak, dating to the late Louis XVI or Directoire period of circa 1790 to 1820, hand-carved with the symbolic vocabulary that defines this regional tradition. The frieze is centered with a carved vase brimming with vine leaves and flanked by trailing leafy tendrils, with diamond and rosette paterae at the corners. The two paneled doors carry shaped lambrequin tops and are anchored at their bases with the crossed leafy branches motif, a symbol of fidelity and the joining of two families. The stiles are stop-fluted in the classical manner, and the original wrought-iron hinges and the finely scrolled cut-iron escutcheon plate remain in place at the lock.

In the Norman tradition, the armoire de mariage was commissioned by a father at the birth of a daughter, slowly filled with her trousseau across the years of her childhood, and presented to her on the day of her wedding. The carved iconography was specific and deliberate: vases and baskets for abundance, vines and wheat for prosperity, and the crossed branches or doves for the marriage bond itself. Pieces in this exact configuration, with the restrained Louis XVI vase-and-vine vocabulary rather than the heavier Louis XV rococo carving, are particularly associated with the Caen, Bayeux, and Cotentin regions of Lower Normandy.

This example has been thoughtfully reimagined for contemporary use. The exterior has been bleached and limed to lighten the heavy patina of two centuries and to bring forward the open grain of the French oak, giving the piece a soft, sun-faded presence that reads beautifully against neutral interiors. The interior has been fully retrofitted with a custom-built six-drawer chest in matching oak, fitted with Georgian-style brass bail pulls, with two adjustable shelves above. The result is a functional armoire-and-chest hybrid that works as a complete bedroom storage solution, a dressing room centerpiece, or an entryway anchor with hanging space above and folded storage below. The original interior was removed during this conversion. Wear, splits, and minor losses to the bleached surface are consistent with the age of the case and add to the depth of the finish.
