Antique Oil on Canvas | Dutch School Floral Still Life with Tulips, Roses & Narcissus in Giltwood Frame

An atmospheric Dutch School floral still life, oil on canvas, depicting an abundant bouquet of garden flowers dramatically illuminated against a deep brown-black ground. The composition brings together striped tulips, roses, narcissus, hydrangea-like blossoms and smaller blue and crimson flowers, loosely arranged in a classical urn or vase.

The painting draws upon the celebrated tradition of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish flower painting, in which individual blossoms are articulated against a dark background to emphasize their color, form and almost sculptural presence. Particularly appealing are the dramatically curved stems and partially opened tulips, which give the otherwise formal arrangement a sense of movement and natural irregularity.

The restrained palette of old rose, cream, ochre, crimson, blue and muted green has a beautifully time-softened quality. The dark ground provides considerable depth and makes the lighter blossoms appear to emerge from shadow.

Unsigned. Presented in a molded giltwood frame with beaded inner border. The canvas exhibits visible age-related craquelure and surface wear, contributing to its antique character. The reverse shows an older canvas and stretcher construction; exact age and attribution would require examination in person.
