Antique Pine Paneled Armoire with Original Peg Rail | Continental Europe ca. 1850

A country cupboard built by hand for daily use, and it shows in the best way. Six fielded panels are set into stile-and-rail doors, the cornice is stepped, and the whole case stands on cut bracket feet above two full-width drawers with turned wooden knobs. Every surface has gone the honeyed amber that only a century and a half of light and handling will give pine.

Open the doors and the history keeps going. The original peg rail runs across the back, ready for coats, linens or a run of baskets, and the back boards are a patchwork of wide, hand-planed planks that were never meant to be seen. Look closely at the door frames and you'll find the small gaps and shifts of wood that has moved with the seasons since the day it was joined.

Storage that works as hard now as it did then: an entryway cupboard, a linen press, a pantry, or simply a beautiful thing to put a wall to.
