A striking antique Tyrolean Bauernschrank, dated 1820, with original-style hand-painted folk decoration throughout. Constructed of softwood, the tall single-door cabinet features a muted blue-gray ground with beautifully aged red painted panels filled with stylized floral bouquets, urns and geometric motifs.
The canted front corners and painted side panels give the cabinet unusual architectural presence, while the molded cornice and base retain a deep red-brown finish. Long hand-forged iron strap hinges and simple iron hardware complement the rustic construction. The surface has developed substantial wear, fading and patina consistent with its approximately 200-year history.
The interior provides generous storage and has been fitted with a hanging rail, making the piece functional as a wardrobe as well as a statement storage cabinet. Wide plank construction is clearly visible on the reverse.
Bauernschränke—or "farmers' cupboards"—were characteristic of Alpine Austria, Bavaria and surrounding regions, often commissioned for a household or marriage and decorated with flowers, religious imagery and the owner's name or date.
