A beautifully crafted benchmade tiger maple chimney cabinet, handmade in Vermont, showcasing exceptionally strong curly or “tiger” figuring throughout the case, doors, and drawer fronts. Based on the construction and pristine condition, this is a contemporary artisan-made piece executed in the tradition of early American country and Shaker furniture rather than an antique.
The tall, narrow form features two raised-panel cupboard doors separated by a bank of three drawers, giving the cabinet unusually versatile storage while retaining the classic proportions of a chimney cupboard. The upper cabinet is fitted with two shelves, while the lower compartment contains a single shelf; both interiors retain warm, contrasting wood backs. Small dark knobs, exposed hinges, a restrained molded cornice, and an arched cutout base complement the highly figured maple without competing with it.
The standout feature is the timber itself. The cabinet exhibits pronounced tiger-maple figuring across virtually the entire façade, particularly striking on the door frames, drawer fronts, and side panels. A warm amber finish accentuates the rippling grain and gives the piece the appearance and depth associated with traditional hand-finished figured maple.
Handmade in Vermont, the cabinet reflects the state's continuing tradition of fine American cabinetmaking and would work equally well as a linen press, pantry cupboard, bar cabinet, book cabinet, or compact storage piece.
