A handsome early 19th-century American four-drawer chest, dating to the late Federal/Sheraton period, circa 1820–1840. The restrained form features four graduated drawers, paneled sides, turned legs, wooden knob pulls and individual brass keyhole escutcheons, all beneath a simple rectangular top.

The chest has an especially appealing dry, timeworn surface, with warm reddish-brown coloration, visible grain and the irregular wear accumulated through nearly two centuries of use. The absence of heavy ornament gives the piece the straightforward, architectural character associated with American country furniture of the period.

The slender ring-turned legs and overall proportions suggest the lingering influence of the Sheraton/Federal tradition, while its simplicity and wooden pulls give it a distinctly vernacular quality. Comparable documented American Sheraton chests from the first half of the 19th century employ the same combination of four drawers, paneled or restrained cases and turned legs.
