An exceptional English Regency mahogany secretary bookcase, dating to the early 19th century and distinguished by dramatic Gothic “cathedral” glazing and an unusually complete fitted writing interior. (Original wavy glass)
The tall upper bookcase features a pair of glazed doors, each designed with three soaring pointed Gothic arches divided by slender astragal glazing bars. The doors open to a contrasting painted interior with multiple display shelves. Gothic-arched glazing of this type appears on documented English Regency secretary bookcases from approximately 1810–1830 and reflects the period's growing Gothic Revival influence.
Below, the slant-front writing surface drops open to reveal an extensive fitted secretary interior with numerous pigeonholes and small drawers. Additional drawers span the case beneath the writing surface, while a pair of paneled lower cupboard doors provides substantial concealed storage. Richly figured mahogany panels, turned wooden pulls, a molded cornice and distinctive scroll-form front feet complete the case.
Good antique condition with signs of wear. Some loss to interior paint.
