A sophisticated Louis XVI-style painted canapé attributed to the celebrated French design house Jansen, dating to approximately 1945. Elegantly proportioned and exceptionally versatile, the settee features a gently shaped rectangular back, scrolling padded arms, and finely carved neoclassical details throughout, including fluted legs, rosettes, and carved floral ornament along the apron.
The frame retains a beautifully aged painted finish with subtle distressing that enhances its French character and complements the recently recovered neutral upholstery. The crisp linen-toned fabric highlights the graceful silhouette while making the piece immediately suitable for contemporary interiors.
Found en suite with the accompanying bergère chairs, this settee was likely conceived as part of a coordinated salon suite. Its restrained elegance and timeless Louis XVI styling make it equally at home in a formal living room, bedroom sitting area, dressing room, or entry hall.
The attribution to Maison Jansen is particularly noteworthy. Founded in Paris in 1880, Jansen became one of the most influential decorating firms of the 20th century, furnishing residences for European aristocracy, American industrialists, and notable institutions. Their interpretations of Louis XVI forms are especially sought after for their refined proportions, superior craftsmanship, and enduring decorator appeal.
