A striking late 19th-century Continental painted pine chest, dated 1897, with bold hand-painted heraldic and sporting decoration against a deep black ground. The hinged lid is emblazoned with a pair of crossed oars beneath the date, accented bx z y a finely painted ornamental flourish, suggesting an association with rowing, a sporting club, or commemorative presentation. The façade is particularly graphic, centered by a crowned rampant-lion armorial shield flanked by wonderfully rendered fantastical birds or heraldic creatures entwined with serpentine forms, all painted in a restrained palette of silver-white, ochre, gold and muted green. Stylized tree-stump motifs complete the composition. Constructed from broad pine boards with a spacious unfinished interior, the chest retains appealing age-related wear, rubbing and scattered losses to the painted surface, giving it an authentic, timeworn character. An unusual piece of late-19th-century folk and sporting art that functions equally well as a blanket chest, coffee table or dramatic decorative object.
